12v Lithium-ion Batteries

Are 12v lithium ion batteries just like any other battery? The obvious response is no. But why? Can't you use any 12 volt battery for any power tool? Won't it work the same way? How much damage will it do to my tool?  The answers to these and other questions can be found right here, so continue reading. I will go over the points that makes this battery what it is: voltage and chemistry types and differences.

Let's look at voltage. Voltage was first developed in the early 1800's by an Italian physicist named Alessandro Volta. He devised a device that would produce a static electric charge. In his many experiments he developed what we call a voltaic pile, a forerunner to the electric battery. In 1881 the electrical unit known as the volt was named in Volta's honor. From then on we have defined voltage as: volts or V, an electrical measure of energy potential. Voltage or V can also be defined as a measure of the strength of an electrical source of power for a given current level.  Interesting, huh?  But what does that have to do with buying a battery today?

Well, not batteries are created equal. Therefore you need to look at the amount of voltage required to power your particular tool. Correct voltage is key. Along with voltage comes battery type.  Batteries are not all made up of the same materials. For now we are going to look at the difference between a lithium-ion battery versus a lithium-polymer battery.

Lithium-ion:

  • lightest of all metals
  • greatest electrochemical potential
  • largest energy density for weight
  • low maintenance
  • causes little harm when disposed of

Lithium-polymer:

  • differentiates itself from the conventional battery in the type of electrolyte used
  • replaces the traditional porous separator which is soaked with electrolyte
  • can be formed and shaped in any way possible
  • capacity is slightly less than a standard lithium-ion battery
  • improved safety, which means more resistant to overcharge and less likely for electrolyte leakage

What does all this mean to you, the buyer? Well, depending on your device or power tool either one is fine, the advantage to the lithium-polymer, is that this battery will be slimmer and can fit in smaller places. At Batteryship.com you will have no problem replacing any or all your 12v lithium-ion batteries that you need.  A 1 year warranty and a 30 day money back guarantee is a bonus too!
